Half a century of history

Since its inauguration in 1975, the Roche de Mio gondola lift has marked the history of the La Plagne ski area. Connecting Plagne Bellecôte to the summit of Roche de Mio (2,739 m), it has accompanied generations of skiers. At the time, it was the longest gondola lift ever built by POMA, a symbol of innovation for the Savoyard resort.

Two major milestones marked its history:

  • In 1982, an intermediate station was added to serve Belle Plagne.

  • In 2003, a major renovation extended its lifespan.

After 50 years of service, this iconic facility is making way for a new generation of ski lifts, opening a new chapter for La Plagne.

A major project for skiers

In 2023, the Société d’Aménagement de La Plagne (SAP) launched an extraordinary project, spread over three years. The aim was to build a modern, high-performance gondola lift that would be better integrated into the ski area.

The main change is the new route: the line now passes through the Col de Forcle, in the heart of the resort. This strategic choice improves traffic flow and opens up new opportunities for operation in both winter and summer.

A gondola lift designed for comfort and smooth operation

The new Roche de Mio gondola lift transforms the experience for skiers and summer visitors.

This modernisation also optimises the management of the ski area: access to the summit of Roche de Mio is now easier from Plagne Centre, without having to go via Bellecôte, improving the distribution of visitor flows.

An environmentally friendly project

The dismantling of the old line frees up the Bourtes ridge, allowing nature to reclaim its rights. This gesture reinforces the protection of this fragile ecosystem, illustrating La Plagne's commitment to sustainable tourism.

Environmental impact studies were carried out prior to the project, ensuring that it would blend respectfully into the mountain landscape.

A useful lift in summer

The Col de Forcle intermediate station enhances the water reservoir of the same name. Mountain bikers, hikers and lovers of alpine panoramas will find it easier to access this area, with greater comfort and safety.

Between tradition and modernity

The new gondola lift embodies the spirit of La Plagne: preserving its heritage while innovating for the future. It connects the memories of the pioneers with the expectations of today's skiers and visitors: comfort, fluidity, accessibility and respect for the environment.

The disappearance of the old line marks the end of an era, but above all the beginning of a new one, full of promise for the coming decades.

A highly awaited opening

Despite the challenges posed by the mountain environment, the project is on schedule. Following the completion of the second section in September and the installation of the first section in October, the final testing and commissioning phases are now underway.

📍 The official opening is scheduled for 13 December 2025, just in time for the start of the winter season. Skiers will be able to discover this new ski lift, the result of several years of work and ingenuity.
